RO/LU was the experimental design practice of Matt Olson and Mike Brady which bridged large divides, from landscape architecture to furniture to sculpture, all with an avant-garde slant that contained elements of John Cage, Donald Judd, Ulrich Rückriem, and many others that operated in a particular spiritual space.
I worked with RO/LU on several web projects over the years, the main one being their studio site, which was designed to eschew the typical portfolio trappings in favor of an ambient and interconnected overview of their thoughts, approaches and processes.
In the primary view, “Random View,” several of these snippets are pulled from a large pool and assembled into a programmatically generated layout with color-treated links to their projects. The other views offer different takes on a more ordered perspective. All are navigated not via scrolling, but by dragging and zooming over a large expanse.
