The name had changed from D-Crit to MA Design Research, Writing & Criticism. The new website put work by students and alumni up front, where prospective students could see what all that research and writing actually produced. Its opening paragraph came with three footnotes – a little supporting evidence.

I worked closely with my colleague Matthew Rezac and then-director Alice Twemlow, including the fly-across-the-country kind of closely, while the new name and identity were taking shape. Around the research projects, a generative grid brought together material from the archive, bright colors, and irreverent illustrations.

The archive could take you from Tanizaki on shadows to a hip-hop tour of public housing, or an artist making alternative homes for hermit crabs. The illustrations were not necessarily the strangest things on the page.

This was one of several projects for the program at the School of Visual Arts, alongside iterations of the annual conference and Summer Intensive microsites.
