Tom Lloyd’s electric light works are cold and mechanical. So is a website, although websites tend to make a great deal of effort to seem otherwise. They welcome you. They offer to help. Let the two get acquainted.
As you move through this digital guide, the works are “activated” on screen. Archival audio and video get into the mechanics of their assembly, letting you spend time with the apparatus behind the light. One electrical thing provides a view of another. The screen, for once, is fairly close to the subject.
The site was designed for use in the galleries, accompanying the Studio Museum in Harlem’s survey of Lloyd’s career, the exhibition that marked the museum’s reopening. An index of works and a biography offer other ways in.
