Gadsby brought respect for Picasso’s work alongside questions about the man, the inequalities of his time, and the ways his reputation has been written and maintained. The encounter required a certain amount of noise.

It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby gets big, blunt letters that behave like an announcement for a fight. They come at you from the street posters and the museum’s façade, then light up on the title wall. PICASSO. GADSBY. The names are doing some work here. One arrives with an enormous cultural inheritance; the other has a few remarks about the inheritance.

Inside, the argument gets more crowded. Section texts and a wall-sized collage of feminist publications bring other voices into the room. There is a lot at stake in the idea of genius, including who gets to be one and how long everybody else is expected to stand around applauding. The graphics give the showdown a public address system. Nuance can come in; it will have to speak up.
